1875 (19 June) envelope to Germany with pair 50c. with ‘P.C.’ in circle cancels, stamps not valid as Cuba not a UPU member and thus framed ‘UNPAID’ handstamp applied at New York with handstamped ‘7’ alongside for credit to USA, this deleted in blue crayon and rated “80” on arrival. Fine example of framed ‘Aus Westindien/ uber Newyork’ handstamp at left applied at Bremen (Four franked letters from Cuba recorded). A fine and rare item. Ex Kouri. 1897 cover to St Petersburg, posted on ship, 2k. and pair 4k. cancelled at Korean port Gensan I.J.P.O. (3 Dec) and framed PAQUEBOT handstamp on reverse. The envelope is endorsed “Via San Francisco” and shows transit of Yokohama (6 Dec) and arrival cds of 27 XII (8.1.98 New Style) indicating a journey of 36 days. Before the construction of Trans-Siberian Railway it was quicker to send mail via Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, especially during winter.
1906 registered cover to Boston, USA bearing mixed reign issues tied Maltese Cross datestamps, reverse with London transit and arrival cds; good condition.
HONG KONG : 1851 entire written from Canton to Georgetown, D.C., USA endorsed “Via Southampton” bearing central , somewhat faint Paid Crown Circle, to left of this two-line ‘SHIP LETTER/ VICTORIA-HONGKONG’, Red British PAID cds overstruck New-York 5cts cds, reverse with faint Hong Kong cancel; some oxidised reddish ink staining, an unusual combination of Ship Letter and Crown circle.
India used in Singapore: 1860s printed envelope to Haverhill, Mass., USA bearing four colour franking tied by a little unclear 'B/172' cancels, red London transit below, '5 N.York Am Pkt date stamp and cursive '16 cents' accountancy,the reverse bearing good example of double oval 'FORWARDED BY BOUSTEAD & Co.' and Singapore date stamp;tiny piece of backflap missing, fine and rare.
Nova Scotia: post 1860 cover to Jedburgh, Scotland bearing single franking 12½c. black tied ‘H’ obliterator of Halifax, transit and arrival backstamps affected by missing part of backflap.
Two entires from the Bishop of Quebec, both to London, the first from 1800, redirected on arrival, the second from 1802, a duplicate entire. The first with virtually full red wax seal, Ship Letter Quebec oval ‘crown’ handstamps.
