(British Post Offices) 1873 (July 26) mourning outer letter sheet to Cadiz franked Great Britain 1867 10d. red-brown in horizontal strip of three, CF-CH, paying a triple rate tied by two strikes of ‘C61’ obliterators in black, light Porto-Rico/ Paid cds in red, London Paid cds and oval PD, red crayon “4” on front, reverse with Madrid transit and Cadiz arrival cds (Aug 18). (Coastal Packets) 1839 (Aug 30) entire from Rio Negro (Parana) to Rio de Janeiro sent overland via Principe with framed ‘PRINCIPE’ handstamp in brown and thence via ‘CORETIBA’ and ‘PARANAGUA’ to Sao Paulo with circular handstamp and then Santos where the famous ‘SANTOS FISH’ pictorial handstamp applied and carried down the cost to Rio de Janeiro. The rates of postage for each leg accumulated from 20 to 50 to 130 to an eventual 170 reis on receipt. A remarkable cover with five different pre-stamp markings.
