United States :  (Wreck Mail) 1892 (19/1) 1c stationery card written in Milwaukee to Vienna, Austria and carried across the Atlantic bound for Southampton and Bremen aboard the ill-fated “S.S. Eider” which was wrecked on the Atherfield Ledge off the Isle of Wight. Violet framed cachet in German ‘Gehoben aus dem/ gescheiterten Schiff/ “Eider”’ applied in England, black straight-line FRANCO applied to show that postage had been prepaid despite absence of a stamp, which had been washed off by sea water. Wien arrival cds at top.
