
USA: 1855 (June 16): 6 c. green on buff stationery envelope uprated with 1851 1 c. blue in a horizontal strip of four with variable margins and internal paper break on third stamp cancelled by three "SAN FRANCISCO CAL." datestamps, ship endorsement "G Gate" at top left, directed to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Without backstamps, fine, attractive and unusual franking, the rate changed from 6c. to 10 c. on April 1, 1855 and 10 c. stamps were not available to pay the rate for mail sent from the West Coast until the end of June of that year, cert.
