
BRITISH AND AUSTRIAN POST OFFICES IN CRETE: 1898 (Dec 9): Cover to London bearing very fine "1.P.T. / Union Jack / MONOFATSI" revenue handstamp and "INTERNATIONAL OCCUPATION / GOVERNOR MONOFATSI" handstamp with manuscript initials, passed to Austrian Post Office with 1890 '1 PIASTER 1' on 10 kr. grey-ultramarine, tied by "CANDIA / OESTERREICHISCHE POST" cds (Dec 12), re-directed upon arrival with "LONDON S.W." arrival backstamp (Dec 21). Extremely fine examples of the British handstamps: the Union handstamp was in use only from December 1898 to July 1899. Tear at top left corner otherwise a very fine and attractive exhibition item.
