GOLD COAST: 1874 (Jan 28): Stampless cover to Hyde Park, London bearing a good strike of "CAPE COAST CASTLE", manuscript "4" and handstamped '6' rate marks, reverse with LIVERPOOL transit and LONDON arrival (Feb 21) cds's. Fine and scarce.


GOLD COAST: 1885 (No 21) Envelope to Germany franked 4d. purple tied by POST OFFICE / ADDAH GOLD COAST negative oval cachet, Addah No 2/c.d.s. and Accra No 22 c.d.s alongside, red Paid Liverpool Br. Packet c.d.s. Originally rated ‘4d.’, rerated ‘3’, BEILSTEIN arrival backstamp, BASEL MISSION FACTORY / ADDAH imprinted on backflap. Envelope just slightly reduced at left.

GREAT BRITAIN - Kent/Cross Post: 1841 Entire Maidstone to Rye, Sussex with very fine strike of the ornate Maidstone ‘P1’ Uniform Penny Post handstamp in red (KT 733). On front manuscript ‘X Post’ (i.e. not via London) with Maidstone datestamp OC/21/1841. Also on reverse good strike of the ‘Rye’ skeleton-type handstamp (SX 1077) only used in 1841 and this being the first example we have seen. Very fine usage.


GREAT BRITAIN - POST OFFICES ABROAD - COLOMBIA: 1880 (DEC 30) Unpaid cover to London, struck with scarce SAVANILLA / BARRANQUILLA datestamp of British P.O. (Dec 30), with superb circular ‘s 1/-’ charge marking in black at right. Reverse with three London arrival c.d.s’s (Jan 31, 1881) in black and red. Scarce and fine. Note: The cover is addressed to Pemberton, Wilson 7 Co, in Grays Inn - Edward Loines Pemberton (1844-1878) was a pioneer philatelist: starting his business in 1862 with an advertisement in ‘Boy’s Own’ magazine, publishing ‘Forged Stamps and How to Detect Them’ in 1869-70. By the time of this letter the company was being run by A.H. Wilson.
