(Cape of Good Hope) 1880 (OC 31) franked mourning cover to San Francisco franked ‘3’ on 3d pale dull rose and 1871-76 1d. horizontal strip of five folded over to back, one stamp split on opening and tied by cancels that have been deliberately obliterated, Swellendam cds on reverse, Capetown cds on front, London transit backstamp, arrival cancels of Dec 14 front and back. Some faults to envelope, an interesting item.

(Cape of Good Hope) Undated outer letter sheet to Colonial Secretary, Cape Town bearing oval handstamp ‘Post Office Cape of Good Hope’ with ‘GR’ initials at centre. In 1805 on occasion of the second British Occupation prepayment of mail became compulsory and handstamped.

(Capeof Good Hope) 1896 1d. postal stationery envelope to Amsterdam, undefranked with hexagonal framed ‘T/ 15c.’ handstamp just below stamp image and a 15c postage due applied on arrival , arrival backstamp; fine and clean condition.


(Cassos) 1912 (13.5.) stampless picture postcard with violet Comando Presidio Militare Casos (Egeo) cachet and Poste Italiane Cassos (Egeo) date stamp, repeated on front; fine condition.


(Cavalla) 1907 picture postcard of Constantinople to United States franked on picture side with damaged 2k green tied by part violet oval ‘ROPIT AG KAVALLA’ with a further very fine strike on reverse, ROPIT SALONIKI transit cds at top applied in transit, Monongahela, PA arrival cds at top. Tchilinghirian records no cover known with this oval date stamp, the stamp is unfortunately damage but still an important item.


(Central) 1922 registered cover to Leipzig franked 10m and pair 20m tied by Wilna 1 cds, violet registration handstamp at top, reverse without backflap but showing part of violet oval Berlin handstamp; scarce commercial cover.


(China Combination I.P.O.) 1901 (17 Apr) card to Leipzig, from Swatow where domestic postage was paid in cash and bilingual cds applied, the 4c on 3c black surcharge stationery card bearing red framed I.P.O. handstamp and image tied Hong Kong cds, arrival cancels at left. The card with ‘Reply’ erased, a very rare usage of this stationery card.


(China I.P.O.) 1901 2c. postal stationery envelope to Leipzig, bearing bilingual Amoy cds where cash was paid for the internal postage, very unusually a 2c. stationery envelope has been used together with pair 4c. to make 10c. overseas rate all cancelled with two fine framed I.P.O. handstamps of Amoy and three cds, arrival backstamp. The backflap is missing but a very rare example of cash paid on a stationery envelope.

(China) 1920 commercial cover to Vladivostok with 1r. imperf strip of five and single paying the triple 2r. foreign rate current in Siberia from October 1919 to June 1920, tied by Vladivostok – Shanghai/ Steamship zh 22.2.20 date stamp in violet of the Russian Volunteer Fleet, with censor cachet on arrival; fine and attractive. The steamship cancel was the same in both directions, arrival backstamp of 28.2., six days later, consistent with posting at Shanghai.


(Chinkiang Local Post) 1894 registered cover to Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, Shanghai franked Golden Mountain 1c. (2) and 5c. tied by two Chinkiang Postal Service handstamps (The two 1c. stamps have been previously cancelled – they were often sold cto for collectors at the Post Office. The left-hand 1c. tied by same cancel tying 5c. and central cancel tying both 1c.), very fine REGISTERED handstamp, numbered “15” , reverse with dated Chinkiang cds and Shanghai arrival cds, also with full wax seal of Municipal Council Chinkiang with remains of string. Small cut to corner of envelope and opened out for display, a very rare commercial registered cover.

(Chinkiang Local Post) 1896 rice paper wrapper franked Golden Mountain with Clouds 1c blue postage due tied oval-framed TO PAY handstamp, reverse with Chinkiang Postal Service date stamp.


(Chinkiang Local Post) Undated ‘Captain Binns’ cover bearing oval-framed ‘TO PAY’ handstamp with pair 1895 ½c. Postage Due with red overprint tied Chinkiang Postal Service cancel which is repeated top right and on reverse. The red overprint is rare on cover.
