1897 cover to Pernambuco, Brazil, franked '80 paras' on 5d. tied by British Post Office Constantinople code B cds, annotated to go via Southampton, London transit and arrival backstamps; some faults to envelope at top, a scarce destination.

1897 cover to Perpignan, France franked two 6c. Central American Exhibition issue with bar cancels and one tied octagonal date stamp, company dated handstamp at left and Paris transit also tying adhesives, arrival backstamp. Slightly reduced at base.


1897 cover to St Petersburg, posted on ship, 2k. and pair 4k. cancelled at Korean port Gensan I.J.P.O. (3 Dec) and framed PAQUEBOT handstamp on reverse. The envelope is endorsed “Via San Francisco” and shows transit of Yokohama (6 Dec) and arrival cds of 27 XII (8.1.98 New Style) indicating a journey of 36 days. Before the construction of Trans-Siberian Railway it was quicker to send mail via Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, especially during winter.


1897 incoming uprated Japan postal stationery card with printed message offering ‘List of Missionaries in Japan and Korea, and Statistics of Missions in Japan for 1897’ to Presbyterian mission at Shanghai, redirected to Soochow, bearing red-brown Japanese despatch, Japanese Offices in Shanghai entry cds, transfered to Chinese Office with Shanghai Local Post index D cds and Dollar Chop of same MR 2 date and a fair strike in blue of scarce Soochow Dollar Chop of 4 MR; two diagonal creases and other wrinkling.
