1883 (23 Mai) large registered printed envelope that has been folded down for exhibiting purposes, to Auxerre franked ‘Sage’ 35c. and pair 1f. olive tied Affrancissement Paris cds, red framed ‘R’ and framed handstamp, arrival backstamp. The 1f. olive with damaged bottom left corner, type II, first day of issue.

1883 (27 Dic) 3c. postal stationery card to Hannover, Germany cancelled Habana cds, dated company handstamp bottom left and arrival cds, mounting residue on reverse.

1883 (6 Dec) registered cover to Vienna franked 1877-88 ‘Sage’ 25c. (2) in both colours, cancelled Paris date stamps. An unusual franking of the same value from different printings.

1883 (AU 4) 1d British postal stationery card used to London bearing Gibraltar ‘A26’ duplex with arrival cds below, with short non-philatelic message on reverse; some slight top right corner bending but generally good fresh condition.


1883 (AUG 21) envelope to Bordeaux, France bearing single franking 1879 30c. black (Sc 190) tied by New York cds, violet company chop bottom left and endorsed “Pr S.S. Lessing”, blue French entry cds at top, reverse with arrival backstamp. The reverse also showing an illustrated flap for a Mexican company; a couple of pin holes towards base and top left corner fault to envelope, The Philatelic Foundation Cert (1978)


1883 (DE 27) envelope to Flurlingen, Switzerland bearing 1880-81 4d. brown, Wmk CC upright tied red Gambia Paid index A cds, endorsed “via Lagos”, PAID/ LIVERPOOL/ BR PACKET transit of 10 Jan, arrival backstamps; some slight aging affecting top perfs and small fault to top right of envelope. Ex Besancon.

1883 (MR 13) small envelope to Hull bearing horizontal strip of four 1d. lilac-mauve plus one overprinted REVENUE tied by blurred ‘A09’ obliterators with Nevis despatch cds, arrival backstamp. An attractive and scarce mixed issue usage. Ex Besancon.


1883 cover to Buffalo, NY, redirected to New Haven bearing single-franking Watermark Crown CA, perf 12 4d. tied by ‘B’ obliterator, this being oversturck by Buffalo cork duplex, reverse with A/Bahamas cds, New York transit, Buffalo transit and arrival cds. The stamp has rounded bottom right corner and envelope a little roughly opened on reverse. Including the letter written on Dec 23rd from Royal Victoria Hotel.

1883 cover to Dover bearing single franking GB 2½d, FJ, pl.23, tied duplex. A heavier double rate cover so 'T' applied and a 'type 2' ship '2' applied in error, this being over-struck with a barred oval. The '5' handstamp was applied in Dover; some slight toning and stamp perfs damaged as overlapping envelope.

1883 duplicate entire to London bearing single franking 4d. greyish slate tied by A Grenada AU 07 83 cds, with further strike to left, arrival backstamp.


1883 envelope with imprinted albino seal on backflap ‘Secretaria De Hacienda’, addressed to Paris routed through Colon to connect with the “Ville de Brest” bound for St. Nazaire. Front bears red French maritime octagonal Panama-Union * Paq.F.A.No.1 * date stamp (Salles 1415a/1) with blue arrival alongside. Rare and early Official cover. Ex Schatykes.

Reverse shows TPO 85 serial 3 of Riga Muravyevo railway line, dated 14 January 1883. Earliest known date of this railway line by Kiryushkin-Robinson is 17 November 1883.


1884 (27 Dice) envelope to Consul at Naples, bearing a fine printed ‘Ministerio De Relaciones Exteriores’ backflap, franked 1879-89 1c. and 10c. Volcano cancelled by solitary negative cork ‘star’, red despatch cds to left, Italian transit and arrival backstamps; light central filing crease and envelope slightly reduced at top affecting printed seal


1884 (30 Ene) cover to Paris franked on reverse rouletted block of five 'Provisorio/ 1 Centesimo/ 1884' on 10c. tied Montevideo cds, arrival cancel on front; fine and scarce.

1884 (4 Juil) ‘La Cloche’ newspaper wrapper to Atiheu, Marquises with ‘TAHITI/ 5c’ handstamp overstruck with Papeete Taiti cds. Fine condition.

1884 (FE 2) 1d. postal stationery card to Lake Superior, Michigan, USA, cancelled by barred'C' with very fine red British Post Office Constantinople code C cds; long message on reverse.

1884 (MY 30) entire to Puebla, Mexico franked 1880-83 4d. grey-brown, JI, plate 18 and 1881 1d. lilac, Die II, paying the late fee tied ‘L.S./5’ L1 Lombard St. London duplex, reverse with New York F.D. transit and Correos Puebla arrival; light vertical and horizontal filing creases clear of adhesives.
