1855 outer letter sheet to London bearing large blue '6' indicating the sixpence rate was unpaid, reverse with three-line 'GIBRALTAR/3 NO 1855/SHIP LETTER' overstruck with framed Liverpool Ship five-line date stamp, red arrival backstamp; ex Osborn.

1856 (23 Dic) outer letter sheet to Habana with blue-green Guanajay 30 Isl de Cuba cds with ‘9’ rate handstamp in same ink and also a’0’ in blue at top right, arrival backstamp.

1856 (3/10) entire to Borga franked 10k. lilac-carmine with good to large margins tied framed Helsingfors date stamp with a cleare strike at right; light vertical filing crease well clear of stamp. Franked at the long distance internal rate of 10k despite being a short distance and this one is the only such overfranked cover recorded.


1856 (4 Jan) entire to Paris franked 1855-56 25r. blue, clear to large margins tied by blue-green ‘70’ within barred circle with straight-line PENAFIEL in association in same colour, reverse with Porto transit and arrival cds.


1856 entire to Vienna, Austria, franked pair 4d. on blue paper, watermark medium garter, tied '634' numeral obliterators, red Aus England Per Aachen Franco date stamp, reverse with blue OLDBURY cds, Birmingham and London transits and arrival cds.


1856 envelope to Sydney franked 6d. Embossed, margins clear to touched, with barred numeral ‘23’ cancel, tied by ‘1d’ handstamp for local fee to Singleton. Manuscript note at left “3rd Secry. Mr. Russell, Paris” could indicate carried privately to UK. Full Oliva certificate.


1857 (23 Dec) unpaid entire with part contents to Constantinople, endorsed “voie de Trieste” bearing central St Gallen cds and a very fine strike of rare framed tax mark ‘3 – 5/ 2 – 20’ for 3 piastres 5 paras Swiss/Postal Union fee and 2 piastres 20 para postage beyond Trieste, to be paid by the recipient, reverse with Trieste Abends transit (26/12) and arrival cds of 8/1.

1857 large linen sack 312 x 155mm with paper affixed with address cancelled blue MAYARI Isla De Cuba cds with high rating ‘72’ handstamp on front; some worm holes through bag.


1857 Lemsal entire bearing boxed despatch date stamp (Dobin 1.04) on reverse alongside boxed “RECEIVED /15 AUVUST 1857” and oval Bolderaa receiver (Dobin 4.01) with date insert in manuscript


1858 (1 Dec) registered CHARGE cover to London franked 1853 imperf Napoleon 80c (four close to large margins) tied by petits chiffres ‘2164’, Morlaix cds in association, framed ‘Apres/ Le/ Depart’ and scarce ‘crown’ FRANCE REGISTERED in red, London Paid cds bottom right, reverse with three surviving wax seals and two French transits; some slight ink erosion not unduly detracting.

1858 (24 Nov) outer letter sheet to London endorsed “Per Packet/ 24th Nov 1858” franked Great Britain 6d. lilac pair cancelled ‘A15’ obliterators, reverse with double-arc Grenada date stamp of NO 22 (the second ‘2’ of ‘22’ inverted), two red London backstamps

1858 cover to Parkhurst, Isle of Wight franked Great Britain 1855-57 6d wing marginal cancelled by ‘G’ obliterator, Gibraltar cds to left, reverse with London transit and Newport I.W. cds; small tear at top of envelope.

1858 entire from Central Anatolia with fine blue negative seal of Kutahya (RR), with central vertical crease and generally fragile.

1858 folded entire to Syros bearing Thessaloniki Turquia cds, small red framed handstamp at right, arrival backstamp; fresh condition.

1858 incoming outer letter sheet from Madras, India to Rangoon with ships endorsement and franked 1865 1a horizontal strip of three tied by diamond of dots handstamps, at centre framed ‘RANGOON/ SHIP LETTER/ Bg. ANNA’ three-line handstamp with manuscript charge, this suffering from ink erosion, horizontal filing crease, otherwise good appearance.
